How to express your opinion in French


You’re at an exhibit. You look at a painting…

Asking for an opinion 

  • tu en penses quoi ?
    (what do you think?)
  • t’en penses quoi ? (spoken French)
  • ça te plaît ?
    (do you like it?)

If you like it 

  • je trouve ça magnifique
    (I find it beautiful)
  • j’aime bien
    (I quite like it)
  • c’est pas mal
    (it’s not bad)

👉 very common in French: we often soften

If you don’t like it 

  • c’est pas pour moi
    (it’s not for me)
  • c’est pas mon style
    (it’s not my style)
  • je trouve ça moche
    (I find it ugly)

Nuance (very important) 

French people rarely say:

“c’est horrible”

Instead:

  • c’est pas mal
  • c’est spécial
  • c’est original

(polite ways to say… not great 😄)

Verb: trouver 

👉 very important for opinions

  • je trouve ça intéressant
  • je trouve ça bizarre
  • je trouve ça beau

(I find it…)

Small conversation 

— Tu en penses quoi ?
— J’aime bien… c’est original

— Moi je sais pas…
— C’est pas trop mon style

Natural French 

You’ll often hear:

  • bof…
    (meh…)
  • ouais… pas ouf
    (yeah… not amazing)
  • j’adore !
    (I love it!)

Your turn 

Try saying:

  • j’aime bien
  • c’est pas pour moi
  • je trouve ça intéressant
