The situation

(It’s that way)

Asking for directions
- Excusez-moi madame / monsieur
(Excuse me) - Où est… ?
(Where is…?) - C’est par où ?
(Which way is it?)
Examples:
- Où est la station de métro ?
- Où est la rue Victor Hugo ?
Basic directions
- par là = that way
- à gauche = left
- à droite = right
- tout droit = straight ahead
Examples:
- C’est par là
- Allez tout droit
- Tournez à gauche
Giving directions
👉 very common verbs (often in command form, also called “impératif”):
- allez = go
- prenez = take
- tournez = turn
- continuez = continue
- traversez = cross
Examples:
- Allez tout droit
- Prenez la première rue à droite
- Tournez à gauche
- Continuez jusqu’au feu (until the light)
- Traversez la rue
Distance and position
- loin de = far from
- près de = close to
- à côté de = next to
- autour de = around
- à … minutes de = … minutes from
- à … mètres de = … meters from
- devant = in front of
- derrière = behind
- en face de = opposite
Examples:
- C’est à 5 minutes d’ici
- C’est juste à côté
- C’est en face de la banque
Useful vocabulary
- un quartier = a neighborhood
- une rue = a street

Small conversation

Natural French

- C’est juste là
(It’s right there) - C’est pas loin
(It’s not far) - Vous y êtes presque
(You’re almost there) - C’est au coin de la rue
(It’s at the corner of the street)
